Trump Plans Tariffs on Steel, Aluminum; Trade War Is Feared
President Donald Trump plans to impose tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum. The tariffs would, in effect,  place "a tax on every foreign shipment of those metals into the United States," according to The New York Times. The move raises the possibility of a trade war. "The administration has said it wants to combat cheap metals flooding into the United States, particularly from China," the Times reported. However, the newspaper said "a broad set of tariffs would fall most heavily on allies, especially Canada, which supplies steel and aluminum to American companies as well as the military." Industrial sectors, including the auto industry, will be affected.

New orders and production, which usually drive the PMI, cooled but were still at strong levels, the institute said. Senior Editor Bill Koenig breaks down the numbers.

Optical Comparators Adapt and Grow
Optical Comparators Adapt and Grow
Beware predictions of the demise of any technology, cautions Contributing Editor Bruce Morey. If the early 1920s saw the dawn of the optical comparator, there has been much speculation about its sunset. "That was especially true when vision systems started hitting their stride a few years ago," he writes. "Many could see optical comparators were superfluous with the use of vision systems. Many thought the sunset of optical comparators was imminent. Many were wrong. Why?" Morey examines why.
