Architect Transforms Abandoned Gas Mart into Design Studio, Experiements with Sheet Metal
Known as the Light/Station, a former gas mart building is wrapped in deep-textured, perforated sheet metal panels, 3/64-in. thick, manufactured and fabricated by Buffalo’s Rigidized Metals, a partner of University at Buffalo’s School of Architecture and Planning. Small holes were strategically drilled into each panel to capture or emit light, depending on the time of day. Christopher Romano, research assistant professor of architecture, and the Rigidized Metals team spent months experimenting with every aspect of the sheet metal, pushing boundaries with each iteration.
