Olympus’ new LEXT® OLS5000 3D laser scanning confocal microscope features 4K scanning and dedicated objectives for detection of near-perpendicular features at close to nano-scale.

The microscope acquires data four times faster than its predecessor, using an expansion frame and long working distance (LWD) lens to perform precise measurements on samples up to 210 mm in height and concavities up to 25 mm deep.

The result is simple, accurate measurement of a wide variety of samples.

3D Printing is a Regular Component of Patient Treatment at Mayo Clinic
3D Printing is a Regular Component of Patient Treatment at Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic is using imaging on a regular basis—creating point-of-care 3D anatomical models to aid physicians so frequently that 3D printing has become a standard part of patient treatment. It is part of Mayo Clinic’s standard of care, IT operations, sterilization procedures and quality control process. The team of doctors working in the Clinic’s 3D lab are now helping other hospitals establish 3D printing labs. Two of these doctors will discuss the program at SME’s 3D printing RAPID + TCT meeting in April.
HP Reinvents with 3D Printing Technology
HP Reinvents with 3D Printing Technology
By using 3D printing, manufacturers are able to design for performance instead of struggling with the traditional limitations of designing for manufacturing and assembly. Additive manufacturing enabled them to accomplish what would not have been possible using other techniques. The resulting part was lighter and less expensive, but as reliable as the old version. This case study shares how manufacturers can optimize their design and production of high-value parts.

Seven Key Benefits of a Smart Factory
Seven Key Benefits of a Smart Factory
The smart factory Trumpf built in Chicagoland, in the works since early 2014 and open to the public since September, is just a few months away from running full steam ahead. Smart Manufacturing recently asked its director, Tobias Reuther, to identify the seven key benefits of a smart factory. Three of the benefits involve future technology, and the other four emanate from technology already in use.

Digitalization, Integration and Manufacturing Optimization
Digitalization, Integration and Manufacturing Optimization
Do you need to improve your manufacturing efficiency? Higher spindle utilization? Better planning and delivery times? Reduced manufacturing costs and higher quality? All at the same time? Pertti Lukkari's webinar presentation will give participants practical examples about how the three Lean Production principles of Quality, Delivery and Cost can be managed simultaneously with automation software and equipment, plus easy, economical ways to get started on this path. Participants will come away with a clearer understanding of how intelligent software integrated with automation and production machinery manages production efficiently and provides a manufacturing forecast simulation showing possible resource shortages.

A Push Back on Autonomous Cars Even Before Tempe, (AZ), Self-Driving Death
A Push Back on Autonomous Cars Even Before Tempe, (AZ), Self-Driving Death
Before a self-driven Uber vehicle killed a pedestrian in Tempe, (AZ), March 18, a recent poll reiterated Americans' ambivalence about the desirability of a self-driving future. Forty-six percent of the 1500 respondents in a survey by J.D. Power & Associates and the Detroit-based law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone said they "definitely" or "probably" would not ride in a fully self-driving car. Plus, many Americans think that auto companies and state governments are disregarding driver safety.

Corporations Seek to Recruit Disability Talent Through Virtual Career Event
What does physical fitness and mental stamina have to do with the manufacturing workforce? A lot more than meets the eye. Although recruiting challenges are usually attributed to a “skills gap,” research suggests that there is also a “fitness gap.” Manufacturing jobs are physically demanding, involve long and often unpredictable hours and require intense focus, and manufacturers are having a tough time finding people with the type of physical and mental stamina needed for such careers.
