Ford Will Get Out of Car Business Almost Entirely to Concentrate on Trucks, Crossovers
Ford Will Get Out of Car Business Almost Entirely to Concentrate on Trucks, Crossovers
Ford plans to shed almost all of its car models by 2020 to concentrate on pickups, SUVs and crossovers. The Dearborn, MI-based automaker will have two car models in North America by 2020, including the Mustang sports car. Good-bye Taurus (again). Good-bye Fusion. Good-bye Fiesta. Senior Editor Bill Koenig, in a commentary, compares the move to Ford's strategy in the early 2000s when it mostly relied on F-Series pickups and the Explorer SUV. Ford's announcement also shows how the era of one-time savior CEO Alan Mulally is truly over.

Consultant Wohlers Provides Snapshot of Additive Manufacturing at RAPID + TCT
The additive manufacturing industry is adding more metal printing capability as it expands, consultant Terry Wohlers said at SME's RAPID + TCT show in Fort Worth, TX. “The industry could not be much stronger,” Wohlers, president of Wohlers Associates (Fort Collins, CO), said at a keynote address for the 3D printing event. "Metal is smoking hot," Wohlers said, referring to metal 3D printing.
Minimize Print Failures with Simulation for Metal Additive Manufacturing
Minimize Print Failures with Simulation for Metal Additive Manufacturing
Additive manufacturing allows for the creation of complex, high performance parts that cannot be produced through conventional manufacturing methods. However, stress and distortion introduced by the printing process often leads to costly build failures and trial-and-error before parts are printed successfully.

Join Autodesk for a live webinar exploring how process simulation for metal additive manufacturing can help you reduce manufacturing costs and limit inefficient iterations by predicting and reducing build failures.

Digital Tool Data Refines Machining, Helps Industry 4.0 Find Its Way
Digital Tool Data Refines Machining, Helps Industry 4.0 Find Its Way
It’s said you don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been. For Industry 4.0 and advanced manufacturing, digital libraries provide that map. The "entire flow of digitalization—cutting tools, measuring fixtures, measuring instruments, machine tools—are set up in the library," said Alexander Zoller, president of Zoller Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI).

Siemens' Digital Process Chain Cuts Oil Field Bit Down to Size
DMG Mori’s entry-level, compact DMU 50 five-axis machining center is producing an oil field rock bit from a 440 lb (199.5-kg) 1045 grade steel workpiece, 8″ (203-mm) diameter by 8″ (203-mm) high, for a major upstream oil industry supplier. The result using Siemens full CAD/CAM-CNC digital process chain was better tool life, a higher degree of accuracy, and overall production efficiencies.
HP Reinvents with 3D Printing Technology
HP Reinvents with 3D Printing Technology
By using 3D printing, manufacturers are able to design for performance instead of struggling with the traditional limitations of designing for manufacturing and assembly. Additive manufacturing enabled them to accomplish what would not have been possible using other techniques.

The resulting part was lighter and less expensive, but as reliable as the old version. This case study shares how manufacturers can optimize their design and production of high-value parts.

Replaceable Tip Drills Offer Versatile Design Improvements
Replaceable Tip Drills Offer Versatile Design Improvements
Since their introduction about 20 years ago, replaceable-tip drills have become increasingly accurate and cost-effective alternatives to solid carbide units, writes Contributing Editor Geoff Giordano. New tip geometries, coatings and other modifications are enhancing their useful range, particularly when processing new alloys. And, as familiarity with these tools has grown, expert users are refining their methods of getting more than a single cycle of use out of their tips.
