Additive is Growing But Has Growth Pains, Too
Additive manufacturing is both growing and coping with growing pains, industry consultant Terry Wohlers said at the RAPID + TCT Show in Pittsburgh. The 3D printing industry needs to sort out the role of hybrid machines that combine additive and traditional manufacturing, he said. Also, there's an adjustment as big companies expand their presence. Senior Editor Bill Koenig reports.

Speaking of big companies, General Electric Co. has emerged as one of the big players in 3D printing following acquisitions last year. “We really believe it will be a revolution, not an evolution,” Philippe Cochet, chief productivity officer for GE, said of additive manufacturing in an address at RAPID + TCT. “We think it’s going to take place faster than everybody thinks.”

Boeing said last week it's temporarily halting test flights of its 737 MAX aircraft, Reuters reported. The suspension stems from an issue with the plane's engine, made by General Electric Co. and Safran SA. The move "marks a high-profile delay in a program that Boeing had said was ahead of schedule," the news service said.

For Ford CEO Mark Fields, "The problem is that while he’s spending billions to prepare for tomorrow’s challenges, Ford’s current business is showing signs of weakness," writes Joann Muller of Forbes. Industrywide sales of cars are down but Ford's cars are doing worse than average, according to Forbes. Another headache: Ford SUVs and crossovers are losing ground to competitors. Muller writes that "there’s nothing wrong with Fields’ plan to reach beyond Ford’s core business of building and selling cars." But Ford faces problems beyond its F-Series pickups.
