General Electric said June 12 that CEO Jeff Immelt is stepping down, to be succeeded by John Flannery, head of GE Healthcare. Immelt was the last man standing from a 2000 competition to succeed a corporate legend, Jack Welch. Immelt emerged as a kind of anti-Welch, selling off some of his predecessor's acquisitions, writes Senior Editor Bill Koenig. But investors haven't bought into the Immelt vision, under which GE concentrated on manufacturing.

Boeing Vows to Leapfrog Airbus With Mid-Market Jet
Boeing has studied design options "from mild to wild" for a proposed mid-market jet, Reuters reported, quoting Randy Tinseth, a company vice president. "We have looked at the wild and I can tell you we know that if you are going to address that market, you need a new airplane," Tinseth said, according to the news service. Boeing would leapfrog reported plans by Airbus to update its A321neo, Reuters quoted Tinseth as saying. The executive was at a meeting of airline leaders in Mexico.

Ford Begins Buyout Offers
Ford Motor Co. (Dearborn, MI) has begun making buyout offers to 15,000 salaried employers in North America and Asia as the automaker seeks to cut 1400 jobs, according to the Detroit Free Press. The voluntary buyout packages range from three to 18 months' pay, the Free Press said, citing a Ford spokesman. Offers vary based on length of tenure, position, and pay, the newspaper said. People who accept the offers will depart by Sept. 30, according to the Free Press.

GM Sale of Opel May Be Completed by End of July
Opel, the European unit of General Motors Co. (Detroit), said its sale to France's PSA Group may be completed as early as July 31, Reuters reported. The $2.3 billion sales was announced in March. At the time, GM and PSA said the transaction would be completed by the end of 2017. Opel said the closing date still depends on regulatory approval, Reuters said. GM is selling off Opel after years of losses.
