3M™ VHB™ Tape-Assembled Scooter Showcases Applications for Bolt-, Rivet-Free Designs
3M™ VHB™ Tape-Assembled Scooter Showcases Applications for Bolt-, Rivet-Free Designs
Using a hodgepodge of “normal” scooter materials—like a sleek wood deck on a polycarbonate base, with aluminum handlebars and polyurethane wheels—refined by creative and groundbreaking designs, 3M scientists Michael Leighton and Brent Bystrom invented and assembled an unorthodox push scooter held together with only tape. But not just any kind of tape, of course—3M™ VHB™ Tape. This particular 3M VHB Tape product consists of a durable acrylic adhesive with viscoelastic properties.

17-4PH: New Stainless Steel Material for Medical Surgical Instrument Production using Additive Manufacturing
17-4PH: New Stainless Steel Material for Medical Surgical Instrument Production using Additive Manufacturing
Surgical instruments are a largely untapped potential for Additive Manufacturing (AM) in the medical device business. While prototyping of medical instruments have been in the engineer's toolbox for years, production using Additive Manufacturing has not become widespread despite fitting nicely into the three AM paradigms: customizable for a surgeon's technique or population, use of complex structures to decrease weight and reduce shipping costs, and redesign to reduce part numbers in assemblies. One hurdle is lack of one of the most commonly used stainless steel materials in surgical instrument production: 17-4PH that is H900 treatable supported by robust data expected by medical device manufacturers.

Why Isn’t Industry Hiring More Veterans?
Why Isn’t Industry Hiring More Veterans?
Too often military hiring efforts are viewed by companies only through the lens of patriotism or a sense of obligation. It is time to broaden this perception. Civilian hiring of National Guard members, veterans and Reservists should be seen as an opportunity—a big opportunity—for employers to hire men and women with proven track records who have already demonstrated the qualities that companies value most in their employees.
