3M™ VHB™ Tape-Assembled Scooter Showcases Applications for Bolt-, Rivet-Free Designs
3M™ VHB™ Tape-Assembled Scooter Showcases Applications for Bolt-, Rivet-Free Designs
Using a hodgepodge of “normal” scooter materials—like a sleek wood deck on a polycarbonate base, with aluminum handlebars and polyurethane wheels—refined by creative and groundbreaking designs, 3M scientists Michael Leighton and Brent Bystrom invented and assembled an unorthodox push scooter held together with only tape. But not just any kind of tape, of course—3M™ VHB™ Tape. This particular 3M VHB Tape product consists of a durable acrylic adhesive with viscoelastic properties.

This software tool can give NC programmers confidence to run any new part for the first time on a CNC machine. Many shops run their first parts unattended, without a prior prove-out. How? The software works with any CAD/CAM/PLM systems to simulate and optimize the exact same CNC code that will be run on the machine, so that it will be right the first time, every time.

Tesla Feels the Heat Amid Model 3 Problems
Electric-car maker Tesla (Palo Alto, CA) said its Model 3  won't make production targets until 2018. Tesla wanted to reach a goal of building 5000 a week by the end of this year. Tesla wanted to build at least 1500 units of the new model in the third quarter, but the company only assembled 260. Tesla chief Elon Musk is feeling the heat. The "setback is a blow to his decade-long goal of creating a mass-market electric car," writes Alan Ohnsman of Forbes.

Change at the Speed of Light
Change at the Speed of Light
Contributing Editor Bruce Morey muses about changes in the laser industry. CO2 lasers "had been the mainstay for decades," Morey writes. "Shop-floor engineers were familiar with them. Manufacturers, taking huge risks on high-dollar equipment investments are naturally skeptical. Skepticism puts a natural brake on technology trends moving too fast. Skepticism can be healthy until the evidence is overwhelming. Then, whole industries make the jump in a relatively short time. It seems the key to getting a leg up is in carefully calibrating one’s skepticism, adopting a new technology not too soon, but not too late."
